Law Day

Law Day, May 1st, is a special day set aside to celebrate the Rule of Law. Each year the Cumberland County Bar Association and its Foundation host the Annual Law Day Breakfast at Terrigno’s Fairfield Inn in Bridgeton. At the breakfast we have a guest speaker revolving around the theme for that year. The Bar Association presents 3 members of the public the Liberty Bell Award. Also, receiving an award is the Cumberland County Mock Trial Winners. The Foundation also announces the winners of the scholarships.

Holiday Events

Each year the Bar Foundation host fundraisers throughout the year to make sure that needy, abused and mentally unstable children have a happy holiday season. Each year the Foundation and its members host an annual shopping party at Walmart in Vineland and purchase over 200 gifts for these children. After the shopping party, our members take time out on a Friday evening for some pizza as they wrap and tag all of the gifts. On the first Saturday in December the Foundation hosts its annual Holiday Breakfast at Terrigno's Fairfield Inn in Bridgeton. Each child gets to meet Frosty the Snowman, Santa and the Mrs. and their trusty and lovable Elf while enjoying a hot breakfast, a gift and a book. Area agencies we help are: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland County, Salvation Army in Bridgeton and the Salvation Army in Vineland.

In the middle of December, our members take time out of their busy schedules for a pizza luncheon with the children of the Mental Health Unit at South Jersey Healthcare in Bridgeton. These children receive pizza, cookies, a visit from Santa who brings a gift for everyone as well as some gifts for the unit to use.

Mock Trial

The Mock Trial Competition, which is sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and the Cumberland County Bar Foundation, as well as other area bar foundations, is a competition that is open to New Jersey high school students. To enter the competition, the high school must fill out an application and send it to the New Jersey Bar Foundation in November. The mock trial is a simulated trial with opening statements, direct examination and cross examination of witnesses and closing arguments. The performance of the team is evaluated by judges and recorded on score sheets. Winners at a county level move to compete in a regional competition then to the statewide finals.

The Mock Trial Coordinator for Cumberland County is Teri Giordano, Esquire. Each high school team requires a teacher-coach and a lawyer-coach. Competitions are held in January. Should you have any questions, please contact Teri Giordano, Esquire at teri@vanembden.com
